Safety Pays Off

Being a part of the Greater Hamilton
Safety Council has its benefits, as the Cincinnati facility recently discovered. Other than the obvious benefits of creating a forum to share best safety practices around the region, participation in this council also rewards the site monetarily- to the tune of $40,000.

The incentive program, which was started in 2003 by the Ohio Bureau of Worker's Compensation (BWC), was established to encourage companies to get together and discuss safety practices and issues. Participation in local safety councils does not guarantee a refund by the state, but makes it easier. Companies that decide to participate are only eligible for the refund if their representative attends monthly meetings and submits reports on accidents and injuries at their company. Based on these reports, if the site has too many injuries, there will be no payout-and no option for a "performance bonus" if the company manages to keep their accidents and injuries low.

"Our site in Cincinnati has been a part of the safety council for approximately ten years. Being a part of the council is a great opportunity to learn form others and discuss common problems," said Matt Scroggins, Safety Manager, Cincinnati. "We are fortunate that one of our employees, Joe Blower, is on the executive board, making our opportunity to learn and refine our safety practices even greater."

The Greater Hamilton Safety Council is committed to providing safety education and accident prevention. The Council, which has been in existence for over 65years, consists of 4 divisions: Industrial, Fire, Home, and Transportation. Each division focuses on reducing accidents and injuries by arranging guest speakers and
presentations.
